In lieu of a Five Things Friday post, I am going to complain instead.
I have a 30 minute commute to work (45 minutes with traffic), so that’s at least an hour per day I’m on the road, plus the time to get to day care to pick Harper up after work. In my travels I see a lot of dumbassery. A lot. And it pisses me off.
Yesterday, for example. I went to Starbucks before work. As I was leaving, I was making a left out of the parking lot (it is at a light and I, obviously, had a green light). I was turning into the right of two lanes when the driver in the left lane suddenly swerved into the right, directly in front of me. I have no idea how I didn’t hit him. I slammed on my breaks harder than I ever have before, so hard I swear I heard/felt them crunch, and swerved into the curb. Even though I was going about 10 mph my body slammed forward. I honked – and he didn’t even look back. When I pulled next to him at the next light he was playing with his smartphone.
Last night, on my way to day care, traffic on the highway suddenly got really congested because a pickup truck was inching its way up a hill, blocking traffic in the right way. It was probably going 20 mph. It had its flashers on, but I’m sorry, if you can’t drive fast enough, stay off the highway. There are enough back roads to get around it.
This morning there was a car in front of my that kept swerving into the lane to the right (just before the highway divided). The driver drove for quite a length straddling two lanes, then back into her lane, then swerved again, almost hitting the car to the right. She then swerved a bit into the left lane, then (after the highway had split) into the right shoulder, over the rumble strips (I think that’s what they’re called – the things on the side of the highway that alert you that you are an idiot who has veered out of your lane). When I finally was able to pass her I looked over and it looked like she was reading something, maybe a Kindle, propped up on her steering wheel.
About 2 minutes later traffic suddenly built up because of someone driving slowly in the left lane, I’d guess about 30 mph, no more than 40 mph. His car looked perfectly capable of driving the speed limit so I’m guessing it is just someone who shouldn’t be driving on the highway.
That was all within a 24 hour period, people.
Daily I see people running lights and stop signs, cutting corners, swerving in and out of traffic, changing lanes without looking – I could go on and on about the dumbassery.
I am pretty sure that if I didn’t pay as much attention as I do while driving (I am a very alert driver) that I would be in an accident at least weekly, sometimes even more often. I don’t know if it’s just Connecticut drivers (though Massholes are also terrible, as are New Yorkers – sorry but it’s true), but I swear it is getting worse. I drive very defensively (not aggressively – there is a difference) because I have to, especially when I have the baby in the car.
Please, please tell me you are an attentive driver. And if you’re not – please, please start paying attention!
